Time To Move On
For those of you anxiously waiting to hear about progress on our virtual walk to Montreal, we finally have an update and it may not be at all what you expected…
A Quick Recap
After our success with virtual walks on the Cabot Trail and the Ring of Kerry, we decided to set our sites on a virtual walk to Montreal to visit our brother Randy. We started this monumental undertaking of 4900 kms in October of 2021 and estimated that it would take approximately three years. Despite encountering extreme weather challenges and road closures we made it to Princeton BC in January of 2022 and by April, despite Big Sis’ bunions acting up and Biscuit complaining that she couldn’t find internet connections to keep up with her Instagram followers, we made it to Enderby BC.
The Grass Is Always Greener
Before we embarked on this epic journey we of course did some investigation about the sights and entertainment that we could find along the way. Enderby was a place we decided to stop because it had the World’s Largest Lawnmower. Coming from a family where you were taking your life in your hands if you walked on our father’s pristine, crosscut lawn, where a weed wouldn’t dare to grow, it seemed like we should visit in his honour. So we spent some time at the Deep Creek Tool Museum where the lawnmower sits 25 feet tall. After a few days of admiring this immense machine, it was time to move on and check out other world famous artifacts along our way.
Eggs and Gophers and Dinos, Oh My!
After a long, tough trip over the Rockies we landed in Alberta, which had many attractions for us to see. First stop was the World’s Largest Easter Egg in Vegreville. It is decorated in the Ukrainian fashion and technically is called Psyanky. It certainly is big and quite beautiful. I wonder how long it took to paint.
Even though it was out of our way, we had to go to the Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington because, when would you ever have another chance to visit a Gopher Hole Museum? Who knew such a thing even existed. And besides, Biscuit threatened to quit the walk altogether if we didn’t stop there so she could commune with her gopher cousins.
While in Torrington Little Sis expressed a wish to fulfil a lifelong dream from her childhood and see the World’s Largest Dinosaur in Drumheller. From a very early age she had a fixation with dinosaurs, spending time memorizing all their names and pretending to dig for them in our backyard, which got her in big trouble when she dug up some of our father’s pristine lawn. So, Big and Middle Sis decided to humour her and further detour to Drumheller.
After Drumheller the weather was starting to get chilly and we were falling far behind on our walking schedule, but we felt it wouldn’t be fair to visit the World’s Largest Easter Egg and pass on seeing its counterpart – the World’s Largest Perogy. Middle Sis was excited to see it and hoped we might be able to get an authentic perogy recipe from one of the locals. So we detoured again to Glendon where it is located. It is quite a sight – 27 feet high and mounted on a giant fork. Apparently they added the fork when, without it, people thought it was a giant cowpie😂. We enjoyed our time there but alas, Middle Sis was unable to obtain the recipe she so wanted.
Which Way You Going Sisters?
Having spent a lot more time seeing the sights in Alberta than was anticipated in the original plan, it seemed it was decision time – keep walking east to see the World’s Largest Paper Clip in Saskatchewan and the Big Nickel in Sudbury or regroup and figure out another way to meet our goal of getting to Montreal to see our brother by 2024.
After much discussion and the discovery that there was a 5k race in Montreal that we could do towards our original goal of walking a 5k in every province, the Sisterhood made the difficult decision to discontinue their virtual walk, go back home then fly to Montreal in June to participate in the 5k walk and see our brother. This means that we will arrive to visit our brother earlier than originally planned, but we know he will still put on a great party for our arrival in Montreal!
We plan on doing a new post every Monday so stay tuned for our next one entitled “Biscuit The Influencer.”
