I Love Rock n’ Roll
Little Sis has an encyclopedic memory when it comes to rock and roll music. She can recall the name of just about any song and the artist who sings it. A recent round of musical trivia reminded Big and Middle Sis of this talent, and it led to the discovery that, although they are related, their tastes in music couldn’t be any more different.
Oh Canada!
Full disclosure – I don’t actually love rock and roll. My tastes are more in the folk/pop area. Carole King, The Eagles, James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel are some of my all time favourites. In my mind, you just can’t beat these classics and, thanks to my husband, we have many of these on original vinyl.
In thinking about it, I realized that my more recent music choices are quite patriotic. Canadians Dan Hill, Michael Buble, Johnny Reid, Burton Cummings, and kd Lang, are all in my wheelhouse. Kd Lang’s version of “Hallelujah” gives me chills every time I listen to it.
And of course we can’t forget Celine and Shania. I’ve seen Celine in concert in Vegas and she was amazing, chest thumping and all. Her duet of “The Prayer” with Andrea Bocelli led me to his music. And Shania’s “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” video certainly caught my attention. She is one of very few women who can pull off a top hat and thigh high boots. But don’t get me wrong – the girl can sing.
A while ago my granddaughter introduced me to “Taylor Swift world” when we found ourselves singing along in the car to “We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together.” Since then I’ve enjoyed a lot of Taylor’s music and have fun trying to decode all the messages in her songs about her old boyfriends.
One of my current favourite artists is Pink, which my family finds very surprising, given my other, tame in comparison, music choices. What appeals to me are her very powerful and topical lyrics. And I am getting used to all the F words, although I do find it ironic that a song she sings about her daughter being “perfect” has an R rated version (that F-word again) and a G rated version. Not sure I will ever get a chance to see her in concert but a girl can dream…
I’ve Got the Music in Me
I know right away if a song moves me. My reaction is immediate. I either love a song or I don’t. There is no in between with me. Unlike Middle Sis, though, it’s the melody that I like, not necessarily the words, and the best melodies are those that make me want to dance and sing along, or dance and lip sync along.
Although I applaud Middle’s ability to appreciate mainstream current music culture (ie. Pink) I remain firmly rooted in the ’50s and ’60s. I’m not sure if that is considered rock and roll, but I don’t really care. I mean, come on…I’m a Boomer. What did you expect?
Country music also resonates with me. The sad stories of unrequited love and disastrous relationships, and upbeat, heartfelt tales of human resilience and finding love can be very touching. Hmmm, maybe the words are important.😊
In conclusion, as proof that I m not in fact a fossil, I leave you with the lyrics of a Lizzo song that has made itself at home, running through my head:
🎵”I do my hair toss, check my nails
Baby how you feeling, feeling good as hell.”🎵
I think it’s a perfect fit for another lip sync video.😊Now that’s something to look forward to!
“Just Take Those Old Records Off the Shelf”
For those of you who are Classic Rock lovers like myself, this title needs no introduction. Classic Rock Rules! In my mind, nothing brings more energy, and electricity into a room. As a matter of fact, I often vacuum my house and do the laundry listening to Jimi Hendrix. The playlist on my Ipod (yes I still have one) is all Classic Rock.
My friends recently told me they don’t like coming over to the house because all I play is Classic Rock. They call me a dinosaur. I am okay with that, and my response is always “Its only Rock and Roll and I like it.”
Some of my favourite artists include Bruce Springsteen, Bob Segar, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and my very favourite the Rolling Stones.
I have been a Rolling Stones fan since my early teens, and I have seen them in concert four times. These guys can still rock out even though they are all in their 70’s. (But I think we can all agree that it’s a miracle that Keith Richards is still alive!)
Like Middle Sis, the only new artist I like is Pink. She is so talented and has an amazing voice. I especially liked her recent performance of her new song “Trustfall” on the Kelly Clarkson show.
I know that my taste is very different from Big Sis, and Middle Sis. Maybe its a generational thing. But the one thing that I think the three of us can agree on is that we can’t write songs, play instruments, or sing very well, but we all love our music.
We plan on doing a new post every week so stay tuned for our next one entitled “Littlest Hobo 2.0.”

Hey Shauna have you ever considered joining Vaudeville – you could rock with the best. Maybe we could do a gig together. As a matter of fact I really like John Fogerty – listen to him all the time in the car as well as the old vinyls… Yup, still play them too. Good one you guys really enjoyed
