    100 (Almost) Posts and Counting

We at the Sisterhood of the Travelling Shoes like to think of ourselves as a well oiled machine – organized and smooth running. But we all know that every machine has a breakdown from time to time and the Sisterhood is no exception – thus the “Almost ” in the title. You see, in my enthusiasm to celebrate reaching the 100 post milestone I somehow miscounted and it turns out that as of today we are at 93 posts… Being the flexible group that we are and determined not to lose sight of the fact that 93 posts is an accomplishment worth celebrating too, it seemed a good time to…

    Try A Little Kindness

When we chose kindness as our word of the month for November, I remember thinking there would be lots to write about and the words would flow easily. After all, we Sisters are kind people and were raised by one of the kindest people ever – our mom Betty. But when it came time to sit down and start formulating what I was going to write, I kept getting stuck. What’s the Plan Stan? I love the concept of random acts of kindness and always feel incredibly uplifted when I am able to perform one. So why was I struggling so much to write about it? What I figured out…

Have You Tried Turning It Off and On?

Unlike our kids and grandkids, the Sisterhood can occasionally be overwhelmed by today’s technology. After all, we grew up with land line phones, black and white televisions and cameras that required film and a few days processing before the eagerly awaited photos were ready for pickup. While we do consider ourselves reasonably “technologically adept,” we occasionally (our kids might use the word often…) need just a teensy bit of help figuring things out. And, as Middle Sis’ adventures below illustrate, we sometimes have difficulty discerning exactly when we need that help. If I Had A Hammer Recently my husband started having trouble with his phone – emails going missing, texts…

When Your Focus Is Out of Focus

Big, Middle and Little Sis all wear glasses and so regularly have their visual focus checked and corrected as need be. But that is not what we had in mind to talk about when we chose “focus” as our word of the month for October. Rather we were thinking about where we choose to spend our time and attention day to day and how to make sure we’re clearly focused on the right things. Would You Repeat That Please? By Little Sis I love to sleep, and you would think that after a long at day work, sleeping would be a welcome relief. I don’t consider myself an insomniac, but…

    Happy Birthday Mom

Yesterday would have been Mom’s 94th birthday. We miss her and cherish all the memories we have of the kind, caring, fun loving person that she was. Especially in Mom’s later years, birthdays were important milestones and meant a lot to her. So today it seemed like a good time to look back at birthdays we shared with her over the years. Perfume and Roses When we were young, birthday parties were held on Sunday rather than on the actual birthday day. With five kids all going in different directions, this ensured the whole family was around the table for the traditional Sunday roast beef dinner and the ensuing festivities.…

    Rosie, Meet Bartolio Sparkles

As a kid I loved watching the Jetsons cartoon. I loved the antics of the Jetson family and was fascinated by the flying cars, the jet packs and of course Rosie the family robot. While it was fun to watch, I never dreamed that we would have anything like the futuristic Jetsons technology in our household, but I was wrong. Enter Bartolio Sparkles. Who or what is Bartolio Sparkles you might ask? Well, it is the name our grandchildren gave to our new robot vacuum. How and why I became the owner of a robot vacuum and why I feel the need to write about it are questions you may…

    Let The Sunshine In

I remember every September in grade school being asked to write about what I did on my summer vacation. Back in those days, summer vacation was usually spent playing with neighborhood kids, the odd trip to the outdoor community swimming pool or to get ice cream and perhaps a trip to visit out of town relatives. Nothing too remarkable to report to your teachers and classmates. Fast forward to the summer of 2021, which has brought a series of events that has made this summer something to write about, but for all the wrong reasons. Ongoing COVID, blistering heat and no rain leading to forest fires in every direction and…

Start Each Day With a Grateful Heart

When I started thinking about what I would write about Grateful, for our June Word of the Month Challenge, I first thought about my daily gratitude practice. But when I sat at the keyboard I just couldn’t think of what to say beyond the fact that it has been beneficial to me. I kept thinking maybe there is something bigger I should write about. After pondering this over my morning coffee, I realized that I was very grateful for our Sisterhood blog in so many different and some surprising ways. Every Boat Needs an Anchor When both your parents have passed away, the world changes. The best way I can…
