Bettybucks 2.0
Our mom Betty was one of Starbucks biggest fans and, with Starbucks celebrating its 50th anniversary a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like the perfect time to revisit our post about Betty and the power of a cup of Starbucks coffee in her life. So, here is that post originally published in March of 2020.

Sing, Sing A Song
Based on the title and picture above, you could be forgiven if you thought that this post was about the Von Trapp family and the Sound of Music movie. This post does involve a family with a lot of kids (ours) and singing, but not the big screen production musical sort. Perhaps it had something to do with our Irish heritage and certainly the times were very different. This was back when the internet and smartphones were the stuff of sci-fi, and TV consisted of three channels and watching it was pretty much confined to the Wide World of Sports on Saturday and the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday.…

That Cute Little Couple
Thanksgiving gives us pause and the opportunity to reflect on our good fortune and appreciation for the people who enrich our lives. It always falls very close to both Mom and Dad's birthdays, so in keeping with tradition, the Sisterhood organized a "Memorial Walk" to remember our parents, known to many as "That Cute Little Couple." Of course the walk was virtual and entirely voluntary.

Mom Always Liked You Best
When one of my siblings recently said to me that they thought I was mom’s favorite, my first thought was who has time to have a favorite when you have five kids to raise?? But, when I thought about it, I wondered if it wasn’t that I was her favorite, but that she and I had many things in common. This was true from the moment I was born. Mom and I were both born in the month of October, in fact I was just a couple of hours from being born on her birthday. More than once mom said that she wished we had the same birthday. but alas,…

A Woman’s Place is in the Home?
Like most women of her generation mom did not work outside the home. With five children to raise I'm sure she had days where going to work might have seemed like a holiday compared to the mountains of laundry to do, meals to cook and a house to keep clean! Once we five children were older and self-sufficient and, being the friendly people person that she was, mom wanted to work outside the home.

Hands of Love
We are so pleased to have our aunt do a guest post this week about our mom. However, before you dive in to her post, we thought a little background would be helpful: “Auntie Lana” as she is affectionately known in our family, is our dad’s youngest sister and, as you will discover, was more like a sister than a sister-in-law to mom.

The Invisible Older Woman
Many years ago, over coffee, a friend indignantly described a radio program portraying older women as invisible. I was much younger at the time and the topic just didn't resonate with me. I tried very hard to pretend that I was interested but my mind was on other "younger" topics.

In Case You Were Wondering….
In case you were wondering, we also had a father. That handsome man is our father, Harvey, and although he was not a tall man, he was a giant in our eyes. As much as Mom influenced our upbringing with her easy going approach to parenting, ( ie. it was often worth your while to argue and push back), Dad was the steady, firm and sometimes maddeningly stubborn hand on the wheel. His was the ultimate and final authority. “Wait until your father gets home” was enough to bring absolute silence on our part. Although this blog is about Mom, we have just marked the 8th anniversary of Dad’s passing…

The Silverware Mystery
When an elderly person passes away, there are usually memories and memorabilia left behind. Mom was no exception. Her passion was taking pictures....many of which featured bodies with no heads, blurry images and some selfie attempts that were of poor quality to say the least.
